The Experience
Someone’s handing me a tiny glass of mint tea before I’ve even figured out which way is north in the Tangier medina. Our guide—Youssef, who knows every shortcut—smiles as I nearly spill it dodging a cart stacked with oranges. The air smells like spices and old stone, and there’s this soft hum from shopkeepers calling to each other. We wander through alleys so narrow my backpack brushes blue walls, then suddenly we’re out in the Grand Socco where everything bursts into color—rugs, lamps, people laughing at something I can’t quite catch.
I didn’t expect to feel so calm up at the Kasbah. Youssef points out where Matisse painted once (I nod like I know more about art than I do). There’s a breeze off the sea that tastes faintly salty, mixing with the smell of grilled sardines from somewhere nearby. Later, driving towards Cape Spartel in our air-conditioned van feels almost too comfortable after all that walking. The cliffs there are wild and open—the Atlantic on one side, Mediterranean on the other—and he tells us about old battles fought here. It’s strange how you can stand somewhere so peaceful now knowing what happened before.
Achakar Beach is where we meet the camels—mine is called Zidane (like the footballer), and he seems unimpressed by my nervous laugh. The sand is cool underfoot and there’s this moment riding along the shore when everything just slows down: waves rolling in, gulls overhead, nothing urgent at all. At the Caves of Hercules later—only 14 km out—the rock feels cold and damp under my hand. Some kids are shouting echoes into the darkness; it makes me smile for no reason except maybe because it all feels realer than I expected.
