The experience

“You ever tried camel before?” our driver grinned in the rearview as we bumped along the coast outside Tangier. I thought he meant riding one, which we did later, but at that moment I was too busy watching the city slip away behind us. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet, like sea breeze mixed with orange blossoms. Our guide, Samira, pointed out the Marshan Palace through a break in the trees. She said the king sometimes stays there but “never when you want to catch a glimpse.” Her laugh was contagious. We stopped for photos but mostly just stood there quietly for a second, letting it all sink in.

I didn’t expect Perdicaris Park to feel so peaceful. There were families picnicking under pine trees and old men playing cards on benches.
