The Experience
I’ll admit it—I was nervous about riding a camel at Achakar beach. Our guide Youssef just grinned and said, “Don’t worry, they’re friendlier than they look.” The sea air was sharp that morning, mixing salt and something sweet from a nearby tea stall. I could hear the waves crashing while I tried to climb up (not gracefully). It’s funny how quickly you forget your own awkwardness when you’re looking out over the Atlantic, sunlight bouncing off the water where it meets the Mediterranean. That line between continents felt real for a second. Youssef pointed out Spain across the strait—so close you almost believe you could swim it if you were braver than me.
We’d started earlier near the Mohammed V Mosque—white stone glowing in early light—and wound through Tangier’s neighborhoods in an air-conditioned van (thankfully). The Marshan Palace looked almost too grand to be real, but Youssef told us stories about old diplomats and secret meetings. There was this moment in Perdicaris Park where everything went quiet except for birds and distant traffic. He told us about the kidnapping here—a weird bit of history I’d never heard—and suddenly even the trees felt like they were listening in.
The Kasbah sits on its hill like it’s watching everything below. Inside those walls, kids darted past us chasing a ball, old men nodded from shaded doorways. The museum had tiles cool underfoot and artifacts that made me wish I’d paid more attention in school. Lunch was up on a terrace somewhere inside the Medina—mint tea so strong it made my eyes water at first sip, tagine that tasted smoky and bright at once. I probably embarrassed myself trying to haggle for a little brass box (Youssef laughed; I think he pitied me), but walking those narrow streets with him felt safe somehow.
By late afternoon, we wandered through Mendoubia gardens—orange blossoms everywhere—and stopped by that American Legation building (who knew Morocco was first to recognize US independence?). There’s something about Tangier: always shifting between worlds, never quite letting you settle. I still think about that view from Cape Spartel—the wind pulling at my shirt, sky stretched wide over two seas meeting. Hard to explain why it sticks with me.
