The Experience

I’ll admit it—I was nervous about riding a camel at Achakar beach. Lunch was up on a terrace somewhere inside the Medina—mint tea so strong it made my eyes water at first sip, tagine that tasted smoky and bright at once. I probably embarrassed myself trying to haggle for a little brass box (Youssef laughed; I think he pitied me), but walking those narrow streets with him felt safe somehow.

By late afternoon, we wandered through Mendoubia gardens—orange blossoms everywhere—and stopped by that American Legation building (who knew Morocco was first to recognize US independence?). There’s something about Tangier: always shifting between worlds, never quite letting you settle. I still think about that view from Cape Spartel—the wind pulling at my shirt, sky stretched wide over two seas meeting. Hard to explain why it sticks with me.
