The Experience

The marble was cold under my hand—colder than I’d expected at sunrise. There were maybe a dozen of us scattered along the edge, everyone sort of whispering without meaning to. Our guide, Amit, just let us stand there for a bit before he started talking about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. I’d read about them before but hearing it here, while the sun hit that white dome and made everything look soft and gold, felt different. Even the air smelled faintly sweet—jasmine maybe? Or just wet grass from the gardens.

We’d left Delhi in the dark (I barely remember getting into the car) but by the time we reached Agra, street vendors were already out with chai and snacks. Amit pointed out Deer Park as we passed—he said locals come there early for walks. After the Taj Mahal, he led us through Agra Fort’s red sandstone halls. The walls are massive up close; you can see old marks where people must have leaned or scratched something ages ago. He told us how emperors lived here until Delhi became the capital. There was this moment when I looked out over the river from one of the fort’s windows and tried to imagine what it was like back then—honestly, I couldn’t.

Lunch was at a place Amit picked—nothing fancy but good food, lots of locals eating there (always a good sign). I tried something called paneer lababdar that was way spicier than I expected; Amit laughed when I coughed on my first bite and handed me extra water. We could’ve visited the Tomb of I’timad-ud-Daulah after that (the “Baby Taj” as he called it), but honestly by then we were pretty full and happy to just drive around a bit more before heading back toward Delhi. The ride home was mostly quiet—I think everyone was half asleep or just replaying that first glimpse of the Taj in their heads.
