The Experience

We were already halfway down the Yamuna Expressway before I realized how quiet Delhi had been at 3:30am—just a few dogs and the odd chai stand glowing in the dark. He hustled us through security (skip-the-line is no joke), and suddenly there it was: the Taj Mahal just beginning to catch the first weird pink light of morning. It didn’t feel real at first.

I can still remember that cold marble under my hand—so much smoother than I expected—and how Imran pointed out tiny details inlaid in stone I’d have missed on my own. He told us Shah Jahan used to visit at sunrise too, which made me laugh because I could barely keep my eyes open. There was this faint smell of wet grass and incense drifting around; someone nearby was whispering in Hindi, which made everything feel softer somehow. Afterward, we wandered through Agra Fort—red sandstone walls still warm from yesterday’s sun—and tried to imagine what it must’ve been like living inside all that history. The view back toward the Taj was hazy but kind of haunting.
