The Experience

Ever wondered if the Taj Mahal looks different when you finally see it in person? I did. We left Delhi early—still a bit sleepy—and the city faded behind us as our driver (Rajesh, who somehow knew every shortcut) steered onto the Yamuna expressway. The air outside was already warming up, but inside the car it was cool enough that I almost dozed off again. I remember passing Deer Park, not really expecting much, but spotting a few kids waving at our car made me smile. It’s funny what sticks with you.

When we pulled into Agra, our local guide Anjali greeted us right away—she had this calm way of explaining things that made even history sound like a story someone told over chai. First stop: the Taj Mahal. I’d seen a thousand photos, but standing there with sunlight bouncing off all that white marble was… honestly hard to describe. There’s this faint scent of flowers from the gardens and you can hear birds over the low hum of voices. Anjali pointed out details on the walls—tiny carvings I would’ve missed—and told us how Shah Jahan built it for Mumtaz Mahal. She asked if we wanted a photo and somehow managed to get one without anyone else in it (still don’t know how she did that).

Afterwards we headed to Agra Fort, just about 2.5 kilometers away—so close you could almost walk if it wasn’t so hot. The red sandstone felt warm under my hand and there were echoes everywhere, like each room still remembered old conversations. Lunch was at Bon Barbecue (Anjali recommended the paneer tikka—I’m still thinking about it), and then we wandered through Mehtab Bagh across the river. The park smelled green and earthy after last night’s rain, and there were bursts of color from all these flowers I couldn’t name. I tried saying “Mehtab” properly; Anjali laughed gently and corrected me—my accent is hopeless.

The drive back to Delhi was quieter—everyone seemed lost in their own thoughts or just watching fields blur past out the window. I kept replaying that first glimpse of the Taj Mahal in my head, wondering if it would ever feel real that I’d actually been there. Maybe that’s what travel does—it gives you these moments that don’t quite fit into words.
