The experience
The day starts with your guide picking you up from your hotel in Nice, Villefranche-sur-Mer, or another location you choose in the area. You travel in a private Mercedes minivan with air conditioning, which means no sharing the vehicle or waiting for other passengers. The route takes you east along the coast toward Monaco and the hills above it.
Eze sits on a hilltop with cobblestone streets and views down to the sea. You walk through the medieval village with your guide, who explains its history as you move through the narrow alleys. The Fragonard Perfume Factory is a stop where you learn how perfume is made: the guide walks you through the scent-matching challenge, teaching you about the "nose," the person who creates fragrances. If you want to visit the Exotic Gardens for an extra hour, that costs 8 euros per person and adds time to the day. As you drive through La Turbie, your guide points out the Trophy of the Alps, a Roman monument from 6 B.C. that stands on the Great Corniche, though you don't stop there.
In Monaco, you see the Prince's Palace from outside and learn its story. The palace interior is only open April to October for separate admission. If you're there at 11:55 a.m., you watch the Changing of the Guards. You drive the Grand Prix circuit at a leisurely pace, passing the start-finish line, the tunnel, and the Fairmont hairpin turn. Then you enter Casino Square in Monte Carlo, where the Casino de Monte-Carlo stands surrounded by luxury boutiques and restaurants. At Monaco Cathedral, your guide tells you about Princess Grace Kelly, who is buried there.
Saint Paul de Vence is a medieval village where Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall lived and worked. You walk the same narrow streets they roamed, and your guide explains the village's role as a muse for these artists. The Colombe d'Or inn, which hosted them, still displays their original works. In Antibes, you visit the Provencal Market in the morning (it's closed Mondays), where local produce and flowers fill the stalls. You see Fort Carré, a 16th-century fortress built by Marshal Vauban, and Port de Vauban, where luxury yachts are moored. The Picasso Museum occupies Grimaldi Castle, where Picasso worked for several months in 1946. You see the building from outside and hear the story of his time there. Cap d'Antibes, stretching 4 kilometers into the sea, is visible as you drive. Your guide explains why it's called "Billionaires Bay." Before returning to Nice, you drive the Promenade des Anglais, the 4-mile seafront avenue that runs from the airport to the port.
