The Experience

We were already winding through the backstreets of Antibes before I realized how much I’d missed the smell of real bread—someone was baking nearby, that warm yeasty scent mixing with sea air as we followed our guide toward the Provencal market. She waved at a vendor who handed her a fig to share with us (I’m not sure if I was supposed to eat the whole thing, but I did). The old stones underfoot felt cool even though it was nearly noon. It’s funny, but you can almost hear how proud people are here just by the way they talk about their cheese or olives. We peeked into Picasso’s old haunt too—just for a second, because there was more to see.

I didn’t expect Eze to feel so… vertical? The village clings to the rock like it might slide off if you breathe too hard. Our guide pointed out tiny details: faded signs, two watchtowers at the entrance, someone’s laundry flapping above an art gallery. We tried to pronounce “La Chèvre d’Or” and Li laughed when I butchered it—she said even locals mess it up sometimes. There was this moment on the terrace where everything went quiet except for a single bird somewhere below and you could see all the way down the coast. That view still pops into my head when I least expect it.

Monaco felt like another world—so clean and precise compared to Antibes’ jumble. We caught part of the Changing of the Guard outside the Prince’s Palace; everyone craned their necks for a glimpse of uniforms in the sun. Our guide had stories about Grace Kelly and Grimaldi drama that made me want to rewatch old movies later (I did). Walking those narrow streets near the cathedral, I kept thinking about how small this place is but how much happens here—F1 races, royal weddings, tourists everywhere but somehow never really crowding you out.

The drive along the Corniche after that—windows down, salt in my hair—felt like something out of an old movie. Five minutes over Villefranche’s bay for photos (my phone almost fell off the wall), then on to Nice’s Promenade des Anglais where people strolled past with dogs and ice cream. It wasn’t rushed; our guide let us linger wherever we wanted. At some point I realized I’d stopped checking my watch completely.
