The experience

The day starts from whichever port suits your ship (Cannes, Antibes or Nice), and the guide picks you up and handles the driving. You'll spend roughly eight to nine hours on the road and in the villages, moving through the coast in a logical sequence so you're not backtracking. The vehicle is air-conditioned and carries bottled water. If you're traveling with small children, specialized seats are available.

Antibes comes early in the day. You'll see Cap d'Antibes by car, then walk the old town to find the Provençal market on Cours Massena: the one CNN ranked among the world's ten best fresh markets. From the ramparts above it, the view opens across the Mediterranean and back toward the cape. A few minutes' walk away sits Grimaldi Castle, now the Picasso Museum. Eze sits next, perched 429 meters high on a hilltop that feels like an eagle's nest. The narrow medieval streets hold craft shops and galleries, and the two watchtowers at the entrance are listed monuments. The real draw is the view: the coast spreads below you in a way that photographs struggle to capture. If you want to linger over coffee, the guide can book a break at Château de la Chèvre d'Or's terrace in advance (an extra hour costs €80).

Monaco's "Rock" (the tall monolith where the old city sits) comes next. The guide walks you through the Prince's Palace square, explains the Changing of the Guard, and takes you into the Cathedral where Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier are buried. You'll pass the Oceanographic Museum, City Hall and the small post office, and the guide tells you how the Grimaldi Dynasty started in the late 13th century and how the Principality became what it is now. There's a five-minute stop at Villefranche's Rade so you can photograph the harbor, then the drive continues along the coast to Nice's Lympia Harbour and the Promenade des Anglais: the British Promenade that runs the waterfront.
