The minivan is air-conditioned, your guide speaks English and provides live commentary, and you're back at your hotel by evening. Passport required for the Casino.

The Experience

The minivan picks you up at your hotel in Nice, and within twenty minutes you're on the Moyenne Corniche—one of three coastal roads that climb toward Monaco. The drive itself is the first stop: Villefranche-sur-Mer appears below you, its bay so clear you understand why people stay here for decades. Your guide points out the geography as you go, and the road keeps climbing until you reach Eze, a medieval village sitting 400 meters above the sea. It's steep to walk up to the top, but the view from the narrow streets—stone walls, terracotta roofs, the Mediterranean falling away—is the kind of thing you'll still picture months later. There's time to wander, and if you're interested, the Fragonard Perfume Factory is right there, where you can see how they've been making fragrance since the 18th century.

After Eze, the route climbs higher still to La Turbie, where you stop to see the Trophy of the Alps—a Roman monument from 6 BC that's been standing on this ridge longer than most countries have existed. Then it's down into Monaco itself. The Prince's Palace sits on a rock overlooking the harbor, and if you arrive in the morning, you might catch the changing of the guards. You get free time to walk the old town, visit the Cathedral with its chapels for the late Princes and Princesses, or just sit in the St. Martin Gardens and watch yachts. The Monte Carlo Casino is next—it's open in the afternoon, and if you want to go inside, it costs 17 euros. The building alone is worth seeing, all gilt and mirrors and the kind of luxury that makes you understand why people gamble here.

Before Monaco, though, comes Cannes. You drive down the Croisette Boulevard, where the Carlton, Majestic, and Martinez hotels line the waterfront and the Film Festival happens every May. The Palais des Festivals is right there—24 steps of red carpet leading up to it. Most people walk up them, take a photo, and feel a little like a star for a moment. There's a Walk of Fame with handprints of celebrities, and the whole stretch is designed to make you linger. Then it's back along the coast to Antibes, passing through Golfe-Juan and Juan-les-Pins, both old resort towns with their own history. Antibes itself was called Antipolis by the Greeks, and its 15th-century ramparts still circle the old town. Grimaldi Castle, now the Picasso Museum, sits inside those walls. You drive past the marina—nicknamed Billionaires' Quay because of the boats moored there—and continue along the coast before heading back to Nice in the late afternoon.

The whole day runs from morning pickup to evening drop-off, and you're traveling in a small-group minivan with an English-speaking guide. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as is the transport and live commentary. You'll need your passport if you want to enter the Casino. Gratuity isn't included but is expected. A minimum of two people is required for the tour to run, and the group stays small enough that you're not herded through stops like a larger bus tour would do.
