The Experience

We rolled out of Nice just after breakfast, windows cracked for that early Mediterranean air — kind of sweet and a little earthy, like the hills waking up. Our guide, Luc, had this habit of pointing out old olive trees or ruins as we drove (“see that tower? Saracen — 12th century!”), which made the drive to Grasse feel like a slow reveal instead of just highway. The perfume thing was real: walking into Galimard’s factory hit me with this swirl of jasmine and something citrusy — I don’t know much about scents but it felt like stepping inside someone’s memory. The woman leading us through the vats and tiny bottles had stories about every process. I tried to imagine picking wild flowers for a living. Luc grinned when I asked if people still do that here (apparently yes, but mostly in May).

Gourdon came up suddenly after a winding climb — one minute you’re in forest shade, next you’re on this rocky perch with the valley falling away below. It’s called the Eagle’s Nest for a reason. We wandered the narrow lanes past old stone houses and little shops; there was a silversmith hammering quietly in his doorway who nodded as we passed (I wish I’d stopped to ask him something). The view from Victoria Square really does stretch all the way to the sea — though it was hazy, you could almost taste salt on the breeze if you closed your eyes. I didn’t expect to care about medieval chapels but Saint Pons had this cool hush inside, like it remembered every visitor.

The road twisted again toward Tourrettes-sur-Loup — violet fields on one side, olive groves on the other. The village is smaller but lively; we caught an artist painting outside his gallery and he waved us over to look (I understood maybe half his French but he smiled at my accent). There’s violet ice cream here if you want to try something floral and weirdly good; I’m still not sure if I liked it or not. Saint-Paul-de-Vence was last — busier than the others but full of artists’ studios and those sun-warmed stone streets where every corner feels like an old postcard. We sat by the “jeu de boules” square watching locals play and talk with their hands more than their mouths.

I keep thinking about that first scent in Grasse or how quiet Gourdon felt above everything else — small moments that stick longer than any photo.
