itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Saint Tropez and Port Grimaud

  • Visit Saint Tropez harbour
  • Explore medieval village steps
  • Visit Annonciade Museum or Citadel
  • Stop at Port Grimaud canals
  • Admire bridges and boutiques

Is it possible for a place to smell like both sunscreen and old wood? That was my first thought when we stepped out in Saint Tropez. Our guide, Luc, had already warned us about the yachts — “don’t stare too long or you’ll start dreaming above your budget,” he joked. The drive from Nice was longer than I expected (traffic is its own character here), but the view rolling into town made up for it. You get this mix of salty air and fresh bread coming from somewhere — maybe that little bakery by the square? I never found it, but I kept sniffing around like a lost dog.

We wandered the harbor first, watching fishermen untangle nets next to crews in crisp polos polishing chrome on yachts. It’s weirdly normal here, locals just going about their day while tourists snap photos of boats bigger than my apartment building. Luc pointed out the Annonciade Museum — “tiny but worth it if you like color,” he said — but honestly, we just sat on a stone wall for a bit, legs dangling, people-watching. A woman in red heels walked her tiny dog past us; she nodded at Luc like they’d done this every morning forever. I tried saying ‘bonjour’ with my best accent and got a smile back (small victories).

The medieval village part is uphill — not steep enough to scare you off, but enough that I regretted my sandals halfway up. The Citadel looked solid and sun-bleached against the sky. Inside there’s this naval museum; I didn’t expect to care much about old ships but something about those salt-crusted models made me think of all the stories tucked away here. We didn’t linger long because Luc was keen to show us Port Grimaud next — “Little Venice,” he called it, though honestly it smells more like lavender than canal water.

Port Grimaud is quieter than Saint Tropez, with pastel houses reflected in still water and little bridges everywhere. We got maybe an hour to wander on our own. There was this spot where sunlight hit the water just right and everything went kind of golden for a minute — one of those moments you try to photograph but end up just standing there instead. On the way back to Nice everyone was sleepy-silent except Luc humming some old tune under his breath. I still think about that golden light sometimes when I’m stuck in city traffic.
