The experience

We were already winding up the Moyenne Corniche before I realized how high we’d climbed above Villefranche: our driver, Jean-Luc, just grinned when I gasped at the view. The minivan was quiet for a minute as everyone took in that blue sweep of sea and the crazy villas perched on Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat (he called it “the billionaire’s peninsula”, I think he was only half joking). After that, he drove us right onto the Monaco Grand Prix circuit: suddenly we were zipping around bends where F1 cars race every year. It felt surreal and a bit silly to be doing it at 30km/h instead of 300, but still kind of thrilling.

Monte Carlo itself is all glass and gold reflections: Place du Casino full of people pretending not to stare at each other’s cars. I watched a couple argue quietly outside Hermès while someone else posed for selfies with a Rolls Royce. We ended down at Port Hercule among yachts so big they looked fake in that late sun glare. Walking along the dock, you get this weird mix of envy and contentment. I don’t know if I’d want that life, but for an afternoon it was fun to pretend.
