Summary

Provence canyons, lavender fields & lakes from Nice in one day

You’ll ride from Nice into Haute Provence with a local guide, tracing winding roads through Gorges du Verdon’s canyons and stopping in medieval Castellane and pottery-filled Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Dip your toes (or more) into Lake Sainte-Croix’s turquoise water before heading home—expect vivid colors, village life, and moments that stick with you long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“Is that really the color of the water?” I asked, leaning over to catch another glimpse as our van twisted along the edge of the Gorges du Verdon. Our guide, Sylvie, just grinned and said, “Wait until you see it up close.” The air smelled faintly of pine and something sweet I couldn’t place—maybe wildflowers? It was early but already warm enough for sunglasses. We’d left Nice behind less than two hours ago, but it felt like another country. I kept thinking: how does this place even exist?

We stopped in Castellane first. I remember the sound of church bells echoing off the cliffs and a couple of old men playing pétanque under plane trees. Sylvie pointed out the Roc—the big rock looming over town—and told us stories about Napoleon passing through here. I tried my best French at the bakery (still not great), and ended up with a pastry dusted in sugar that melted fast in the heat. After that, we followed winding roads past lavender fields—though honestly, only a few purple patches left since it was late July. Still smelled good though, kind of herbal and dusty at once.

Moustiers-Sainte-Marie was next. It’s perched between cliffs with this little star hanging on a chain overhead—I never figured out how they got it up there. Pottery shops everywhere; I bought a tiny cup painted with blue flowers because why not? Lunch was just sandwiches by the fountain, legs dangling over cool stone steps while swallows darted above us. The lake—Sainte-Croix—looked unreal from up high: turquoise against pale rocks and green woods. Some people went swimming but I just sat on a boulder with my feet in the water, trying to memorize how bright everything looked under that sun.

I didn’t expect to feel so small here—in a good way. The canyon walls are huge and quiet except for wind and distant voices bouncing around. On the drive back to Nice, everyone fell asleep except Sylvie humming along to some old chanson on the radio. Even now, days later, I keep thinking about that color—the blue-green water—and wondering if it really looked like that or if my memory’s making it brighter.
