Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Giza and Saqqara Pyramids

  • Meet guide at Alexandria port
  • Drive south to Giza Plateau
  • Explore Great Pyramid and Sphinx
  • Transfer to Saqqara necropolis
  • Visit Step Pyramid of Djoser
  • Drive back to Alexandria port

The Experience

The drive south from Alexandria takes about 2.5 hours. When you reach the Giza Plateau, you stand at the base of the Great Pyramid of Khufu (2.3 million blocks that have held for 4,500 years), and walk to the panoramic viewpoint where all three pyramids align. Your Egyptologist then guides you down to the Great Sphinx, carved from a single limestone ridge. The focus stays tight because the cruise clock matters, but you get the real story of how these structures were built and why they still stand, not a rushed photo stop.

A short transfer brings you to Saqqara, the vast necropolis of ancient Memphis, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser rises in six receding tiers. Built around 4,700 years ago by the architect Imhotep, it is the oldest large stone structure ever raised and the prototype for everything at Giza. Your guide points out how the design steps upward. An idea being tested in stone for the first time. Saqqara draws far fewer visitors than Giza, so it is a calmer stop before the drive back to Alexandria.

Your guide meets you outside the cruise dock holding a sign with your name. Lunch happens in Cairo during the day, and all entrance fees to both sites are covered. The private air-conditioned vehicle means no group waits or schedule changes. The timing is built around your ship's departure so you're back aboard in good time.

Top questions

How long is the drive from Alexandria to Giza?

The drive south from Alexandria to the Giza Plateau takes about 2.5 hours each way, so plan for roughly five hours of travel time across the full day.

What is the Step Pyramid of Djoser and why does it matter?

The Step Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, built around 4,700 years ago by the architect Imhotep, is the oldest large stone structure ever raised. It was the prototype for the smooth-sided pyramids at Giza, so your guide connects the two sites to show how pyramid engineering evolved.

Will I get time to walk around the pyramids or is it just viewing from a distance?

You walk to the panoramic viewpoint at Giza where all three pyramids align and down to the Great Sphinx, carved from a single limestone ridge. At Saqqara you explore the Step Pyramid on foot. The site draws far fewer visitors than Giza, so the pace is calmer.

What happens if my ship is delayed or I'm late getting off?

At booking, you provide your ship name, docking time, disembarkation time and re-boarding time. Your guide and manager wait for you at the cruise dock with a sign showing your name, and the itinerary is timed so you're back aboard before your ship departs.

Is lunch included, and where do we eat?

Lunch in Cairo is included in the tour price. The meal happens during the day between the two pyramid sites.
