The experience

Eight hours takes you through four major sites across the Cairo region. You start at the Giza Pyramids (Cheops, Chephren and Mykerinos), then move to the Valley Temple where priests mummified the pharaohs, and stand in front of the Sphinx with its lion body and human head guarding the complex. From there the route heads 27 km southwest to Sakkara, where the Step Pyramid built for King Zoser marks a turning point in pyramid evolution, the bridge between simple mastabas and the monumental forms that followed.

Dahshur comes next, a royal necropolis in the desert holding some of Egypt's oldest and best-preserved pyramids. The day ends in Memphis, the ancient capital founded around 3100 B.C., where you see the colossal statue of Ramses II and the great Alabaster Sphinx. An air-conditioned vehicle carries you between sites, and snacks are provided along the way. Your guide speaks English or Spanish and handles the route. You return to your hotel at the end.
