We’d barely stepped off the ship in Alexandria when our driver waved us over—he had this easy smile, like he knew we were nervous about the long road to Cairo. The drive was longer than I expected (almost three hours), but honestly, watching the city fade into desert while our guide, Hossam, told us about his childhood trips to Giza made it feel shorter. He pointed out some roadside stalls selling guava juice—I still regret not trying it. Next time.

The first glimpse of the Great Pyramid of Giza just sort of sneaks up on you. It’s massive but also weirdly silent despite the crowds. Hossam explained how Khufu’s pyramid is still mostly a mystery—he even showed us where archaeologists found that tiny ivory statue (I had to squint). The wind kicked up little bursts of sand and I got some in my mouth—tasted like old stone, if that makes sense? We walked around the Sphinx too; its face is more battered than I thought, but somehow that made it feel more real.

Lunch was at this place Hossam liked—not fancy, but good. I can’t remember what the bread was called (he laughed at my pronunciation), but it was warm and soft and came with something spicy. Afterward we headed to the Grand Egyptian Museum. I’m not usually a museum person but seeing Tutankhamun’s mask up close… it’s hard to explain. Gold that looks almost alive under the lights. There were kids on school trips running around, teachers shushing them in Arabic—it felt lively, not stuffy.

On the way back to Alexandria port, everyone got quiet for a bit. Maybe tired or just thinking about how old everything we’d seen really is. I kept replaying Hossam’s story about his grandfather seeing the pyramids for the first time—felt kind of lucky to have heard it. If you’re debating this day trip from Alexandria to Cairo, just do it for those small moments you can’t plan.
