The Experience
You're picked up at 6am and travel by private, air-conditioned minivan roughly 220 kilometers south to Cairo. The drive itself carries snippets of history: your guide talks through Cairo's past and what you're about to see. After about three hours, you arrive at the Giza Plateau and stand in front of the three main pyramids: Cheops, Chephren and Menkaure. Your guide walks you through how and why they were built, then takes you down to the feet of the Great Sphinx, the limestone sculpture with a lion's body and a human head. You get time to photograph both the pyramids and the Sphinx, then stroll the nearby Valley Temple, part of the funerary complex for Chephren's pyramid.
Lunch at a local restaurant breaks the day in the middle. Afterward, you continue to Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital dating to 3100 BC, where you see the colossal statue of Ramses II and the Alabaster Sphinx. Then it's on to Saqqara, 27 kilometers southwest of Cairo, to visit the Step Pyramid built for King Zoser: a key landmark in how pyramid design evolved from simple mastabas to the forms you saw at Giza. The tour wraps with your return transfer to Alexandria port, timed to your ship's schedule.
