The experience

The day starts before sunrise. Your driver collects you from your hotel and takes you to Angkor Wat in darkness, positioning you to watch the light break over the largest religious monument in the world. The temple's scale becomes visible as the sun rises: an astonishingly large complex that symbolized the power of the ancient Angkor civilization. After sunrise, you have breakfast nearby before moving on.

From there, the tour moves through Angkor Thom, the latter capital of the Angkor Empire. You enter through the famous South Gate, lined with carved gods and demons locked in an eternal tug-of-war. At the centre stands Bayon Temple, covered in countless beatific carved faces gazing at the surrounding forest. Next is Ta Prohm, a ruin partially reclaimed by jungle and known as the Tomb Raider temple from the 2001 film. Ta Keo comes next. A square, layered-pyramid temple that was never finished, giving it a different character from the others. Climbing its terraces offers views over the jungle. Finally, you reach Banteay Kdei, also called the citadel of monk's cells, where towering silk cotton tree roots weave through the ruined walls.
