Pickup happens at 4:30am from your hotel, early enough to reach Angkor Wat before sunrise. The guide takes you through the corridors and terraces of the main temple while light breaks across the complex: the moment most visitors come to see. From there the route moves through four more temples, each one different in character and what it reveals about the Angkor Empire.

Banteay Kdei sits partially overgrown, with silk cotton tree roots weaving through the ruined walls. A sight the guide will point out as you walk. Ta Prohm, the temple made famous by the Tomb Raider film, shows what happens when jungle reclaims stone. Ta Keo was never finished, so its square, layered-pyramid shape stands apart from the others. Climbing its terraces opens views over the forest. Angkor Thom, the later capital, brings you through the South Gate lined with carved gods and demons, then to Bayon at the center, where 54 towers hold more than 200 carved faces gazing out at the surrounding trees.
