The experience

The day starts with hotel pickup in the dark. You're driven to the Angkor Enterprise office to buy your park ticket, then straight to Angkor Wat to watch the sunrise break over the temple's towers (weather permitting). A professional English-speaking guide walks you through the complex, explaining the Khmer architecture, the religious history layered into the stone, and where to stand for photographs. The temple is massive and the guide's narration keeps the scale and the story from blurring together.

After sunrise you stop at a restaurant for a break, bring your own snacks if you prefer, or book breakfast as an add-on when you reserve. Then you return to Angkor Wat to explore it in detail, moving through the galleries and courtyards with the guide explaining what each section represents. The vehicle handles the short distances between temples, so you're not walking the whole park on foot. Next is Angkor Thom, the walled city complex, where you see Bayon temple with its distinctive carved stone faces, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King. Finally, Ta Prohm (the temple famous from the Tomb Raider film), where tree roots have grown through the ancient stones.

You're back at your hotel by mid-afternoon. Cold towels and bottled water come with the tour. The guide speaks English throughout.
