The Experience

I’ll be honest — I booked this Angkor Wat private tuk-tuk tour mostly because I was curious if sunrise could really live up to the hype. My friend said you haven’t seen Cambodia until you’ve watched the towers appear out of the mist. So there we were, barely awake, climbing into Geko’s tuk-tuk before dawn. The air was thick and soft, almost sticky, but it felt good just rolling through the quiet streets while most of Siem Reap was still asleep. Geko handed us bottled water (already cold) and grinned like he knew something we didn’t.

We reached Angkor Wat in that weird blue light before sunrise — not quite night, not quite morning. There were a few other travelers shuffling around but somehow it didn’t feel crowded at all. Our guide pointed out where to stand for the best view (he was right), and as the sun started to burn through the haze, those towers really did look unreal. There was a moment when everyone just went silent, except for a monk’s chant drifting from somewhere behind us. I’m not sure if it was the lack of sleep or the place itself but I felt strangely calm — like I’d stepped out of time for a bit.

After that, we zipped off towards Bayon and Ta Prohm in our tuk-tuk, passing locals on bikes and kids waving from roadside stalls. Geko seemed to know every shortcut shaded by trees — he even dodged a group of monkeys who looked way too interested in our snacks. At Bayon, our guide explained some of the carvings (I tried repeating a Khmer word he taught me — pretty sure I butchered it; he just laughed). The faces staring down from the stone are kind of haunting but also friendly in a weird way.

By midday it got hot enough that my shirt stuck to my back, but every time we returned to the tuk-tuk there were cold towels waiting for us. That little detail made such a difference — especially after wandering through Ta Keo’s sandstone steps or brushing past tree roots at Ta Prohm. It’s wild how nature is just swallowing those temples back up; green everywhere, roots curling over old walls. We ended with Banteay Kdei — smaller than I expected but so detailed up close you could get lost tracing patterns with your finger. Funny how what sticks isn’t always what you thought it would be.
