From there the driver takes you north to Angkor Thom, the Khmer Empire's former capital. The southern gate opens onto Bayon Temple, where the real landmark moment arrives: enormous central towers covered in more than 200 carved faces staring outward. You pass the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King on the way through the complex. Lunch is on your own, then the final stop is Ta Prohm, a temple set deep in jungle where fig trees have begun to overtake the stone: a maze of ornate ruins that feels less excavated than reclaimed.
