The Experience

I almost missed the pickup — set my alarm for 4:45 PM instead of AM. The driver waited anyway, grinning when I stumbled out with one shoe on. It was still pitch dark as we drove from Siem Reap, and the air smelled like wet earth after last night’s rain. Our guide, Dara, handed out bottled water and told us about his favorite childhood memory at Angkor Wat. He said the best spot for sunrise is actually a little off to the left of the main pond (he was right). I didn’t expect so many locals there too — monks in saffron robes, early joggers, everyone whispering as the sky started to turn pinkish gold.

The sunrise at Angkor Wat wasn’t some dramatic movie moment — more like a slow reveal. I could hear frogs and a distant rooster while Dara pointed out carvings in the stone that most people walk right past. After wandering through echoey corridors (the sandstone felt cool under my hand), we stopped for breakfast near Srah Srang. There’s a place with plastic chairs where they serve strong coffee and rice noodles; I tried to order in Khmer but mostly just made the cook laugh. The sun was already getting hot by then but Dara had these cold towels that felt like heaven on my neck.

Ta Prohm is where they filmed that Angelina Jolie movie — Lara Croft? The trees really do look like they’re swallowing the temple whole. We got there before the big groups so it was just us and a couple of birds flitting around. At Bayon Temple later, all those faces carved into stone are way bigger than I imagined; Dara showed me one that apparently looks like his uncle (I kind of see it). By midday I was sweaty and tired but weirdly happy — maybe it’s something about being surrounded by all that history and jungle at once. On the drive back into town, I kept thinking about how quiet it felt standing in those ruins right after dawn. Still sticks with me.
