The experience

The day begins in darkness. Your guide picks you up at the hotel before dawn and drives you to Angkor Wat, where you enter from the rarely visited eastern side and walk through ancient cloistered corridors as the sun rises. You'll spend two full hours inside the great temple exploring the central chambers, upper terraces and the longest stretch of bas-reliefs in the world: your guide unravels the stories carved into the stone and explains what life looked like during the height of the Khmer Empire. After sunrise, you rest and have breakfast outside the temple (not included).

The morning continues at Ta Prohm, the jungle-covered temple that once housed 2,740 monks and looks much as it did when French explorer Henri Mouhot rediscovered it in the early 1850s. From there you move into Angkor Thom, passing the Terrace of the Leper King and the Terrace of the Elephants before reaching Bayon Temple, where more than 200 enormous carved faces cover the central towers. You'll also see the South Gate of Angkor Thom, flanked by 54 stone figures on each side: gods on the left, demons on the right. The tour ends between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., giving you the afternoon free.

You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle throughout, and the guide speaks Spanish. A bottle of water and a damp towel are provided to keep you cool during the heat of the morning. Bring a flashlight for the pre-dawn walk through Angkor Wat's corridors.
