The Experience

The first thing I remember is the sound — tires crunching over red dirt as our Army Jeep rolled past sleepy Siem Reap streets into the thick green hush of Angkor. Our guide, Dara, waved at an old man pedaling by with a cart full of coconuts. The air was already warm but not heavy yet, and I could smell something sweet from roadside stalls (maybe grilled bananas?). I didn’t expect to feel so awake that early, honestly.

We bumped along towards Angkor Thom’s South Gate. Dara pointed out carvings on the stone faces — he said some locals believe they’re always watching over travelers. At Bayon temple, I tried to count all those serene smiles but lost track after twenty-something. My friend tried to mimic one for a photo; she failed spectacularly and Dara laughed so hard he nearly dropped his water bottle. There was this moment where the only sound was cicadas and distant chanting from somewhere deeper in the ruins — kind of eerie but peaceful too.

Ta Prohm looked exactly like every photo you’ve seen but also nothing like them — roots twisting around ancient stones, moss everywhere, light slanting through gaps in the trees. It felt like time had just stopped in there. Lunch was at a local house near Srah Srang — simple rice, chicken with lemongrass, cold mango for dessert. Sitting outside with my shoes off and my feet in the grass, I realized how quiet it was compared to the temples.

We saved Angkor Wat for last. Walking up those steps in the late afternoon sun felt heavier than I thought it would (or maybe that was just all the climbing). Dara told us stories about old kings and monks while we wandered through shadowy corridors. I still think about that view across the moat — sky reflected perfectly in the water, everything golden for a second before dusk crept in. We rode back dusty and tired but weirdly happy, like we’d seen something important even if we couldn’t put it into words.
