The experience

Your guide meets you at your hotel at 8:30 AM and takes you to the ticket office, where you'll buy your entrance pass if you haven't already. From there, the day moves through the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom, starting at the South Gate with its gigantic smiling stone faces carved into the entrance. Bayon Temple sits at the heart of Angkor Thom, famous for more than 200 serene faces adorning its towers and the intricate bas-reliefs that cover its walls. It's one of Cambodia's most photographed sites. The route then takes you to Baphuon, an 11th-century pyramid-shaped temple mountain originally dedicated to Shiva, where steep terraces show the engineering skill of early Khmer builders.

The Terrace of the Elephants comes next, a 350-meter ceremonial platform carved with detailed images of elephants, garudas, and mythical creatures: King Jayavarman VII used it to watch royal processions and public ceremonies. A short walk away sits the Terrace of the Leper King, a moss-covered stone platform believed to represent either Yama, the god of death, or a Khmer king who suffered from leprosy. Your guide explains the history and mythology at each stop as you move through the complex.

Ta Prohm, the jungle temple famous from the Tomb Raider film, shows what happens when a 12th-century Buddhist monastery is left largely untouched for centuries: massive silk-cotton and strangler fig trees have grown through and around the stone ruins, creating the sense of walking through a place nature has reclaimed. After lunch at a nearby restaurant your guide recommends, you'll visit Angkor Wat itself, the largest religious monument in the world. Built in the early 12th century as a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu and later revered as a Buddhist site, it's an architectural and spiritual masterpiece that anchors the entire complex.
