The experience

The day begins in darkness. Your guide picks you up from your hotel and drives to Angkor Wat, where you'll stand on the grounds before the sun breaks the horizon. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, built across 162 hectares, and the light hitting the central towers as day arrives is the reason this tour starts early. You'll have time to watch the sunrise and photograph it before the site fills with other visitors.

Once the sun is up, you move through the cooler morning to Angkor Thom, the walled city built in the late 12th century. You'll pass through the Gate to Bayon (a 12th-century city gate carved with faces and lined with stone figures along a causeway), and then enter Bayon Temple itself, a richly decorated Khmer temple at the center of the city, built as the state temple of King Jayavarman VII. A breakfast break happens near the temple area before you continue to Ta Prohm, the Buddhist temple famous from the Tomb Raider films, where massive tree roots have grown through and over the stone structures. The contrast between the carved stone and the living wood is the visual anchor of this stop.

The route also includes Ta Keo, possibly the first Khmer temple built entirely of sandstone, and Banteay Kdei before you return to your hotel. An English-speaking guide leads the group throughout, and the minibus is air-conditioned. You'll receive a cool towel and water during the day. Temple entrance fees (37 USD per person for a one-day pass) are paid separately when you arrive at the site, not included in the tour price.
