The Experience

I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical about seeing Angkor Wat and the rest of the temples by tuk tuk—thought it might feel touristy or rushed. But honestly, there’s something about the way the air moves through those open sides as you rumble out of Siem Reap at 8am. Our guide, Dara, met us right at our hotel (he actually waved from across the street, grinning), and within minutes we were weaving past locals setting up food stalls, the smell of grilled pork mixing with incense from some hidden altar. It’s noisy in a gentle way—roosters somewhere, engines sputtering, but nothing harsh.

The first stop was Angkor Thom. Dara told us stories about King Jayavarman VII like he was an old friend—he even pointed out where the moat used to be full of crocodiles (I’m not sure if that part’s true but he swore it). The Bayon temple hit me harder than I expected. Those carved faces everywhere—somehow friendly and distant at the same time. I tried to count them but gave up after twenty-something; Dara just laughed and said nobody really knows how many there are. The light inside is weirdly soft, almost blue in places. My shoes kept catching on uneven stones—I nearly tripped once but caught myself on a wall that felt cool even in the heat.

After that we rolled past the Terrace of the Elephants (the carvings are so worn smooth you want to touch them), then into Ta Prohm where tree roots have swallowed half the walls. It smells like damp earth and old wood inside—kind of peaceful but also wild. There was a quiet moment when everyone else wandered off and I just stood there listening to birds and thinking about how long these stones have been here compared to me. I still think about that silence sometimes.
