The experience

The day starts where you want it to. Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious monument, is famous for its sunrise, but the tour runs on your schedule: early morning, mid-morning or whenever suits you. The guide meets you at your hotel and drives you through the Angkor complex in either a minivan with air conditioning or an open tuk-tuk, depending on what you prefer. From there, the route unfolds at a pace you control: no fixed stops, no herding through crowds on a set timetable.

Angkor Thom, the former capital of the Angkor Empire, sits next. You enter through the South Gate, lined with carved gods and demons locked in an eternal tug-of-war, and move into the Bayon Temple at the site's center: a structure covered in countless carved faces gazing out at the forest. Ta Prohm follows: the temple half-reclaimed by jungle, its stones wrapped in tree roots, the one made famous by the Tomb Raider film. Banteay Srei, smaller and better preserved than most temples in Angkor, shows what the original structures might have looked like when they were built, with restored stonework and details intact.

The guide is English-speaking and knowledgeable about the history and architecture of each site. Water is chilled and available throughout the day.
