Cook Four Thai Dishes in a Bangkok Family Kitchen, Then Eat Them

You cook four traditional Thai dishes from scratch under guidance from a local chef in her family kitchen, using fresh ingredients and authentic techniques. The class includes all ingredients, equipment, a recipe booklet, and photos. You eat what you've made together, then leave with the skills to recreate these dishes at home. It's a hands-on experience in a real Bangkok neighborhood, not a commercial cooking school.

3h 30m

Step-by-step itinerary

  • Meet Chef Joy and Mahanakorn family
  • Learn about essential Thai ingredients
  • Prepare Tom Yum Goong starter
  • Cook Pad Thai Goong main dish
  • Make Chicken Green Curry with chili paste
  • Enjoy seasonal Thai dessert
  • Eat your homemade Thai meal together

The Experience

The kitchen smells like lemongrass and lime before anyone picks up a knife. Chef Joy and her family are already there, ingredients laid out on the counter in small bowls—fresh chilies, kaffir lime leaves, tamarind paste, coconut milk—and you're standing in their home in a quiet Bangkok neighborhood, not in some commercial cooking school with twenty other people. The class starts with an introduction to what makes Thai food work: the balance between sour, salty, sweet, and spicy, and how to build it. Then you cook. Everyone does their own dishes.

The first thing most people make is Tom Yum Goong, the shrimp soup that tastes like it's been simmering for hours but comes together in minutes once you understand the technique. You're learning from someone who has made it hundreds of times, but she's not standing over you—she's there when you need her, correcting your knife angle or telling you when the paste is the right color. After Tom Yum comes Pad Thai Goong, the noodle dish that shows up on every menu in the city, except you're making it from scratch and it tastes nothing like the rushed version at a street stall. Then the green curry, which means you blend your own chili paste first, watching the fresh herbs break down into something fragrant and alive before it hits the coconut milk and chicken. A seasonal dessert rounds it out. By the time you sit down to eat what you've cooked, you're not a tourist anymore—you're someone who knows how to make Thai food.

The location matters. It's near Wat Paknam, the temple with the Giant Buddha, but you're not in the tourist crush—you're in a neighborhood where locals live and shop. Public transportation gets you there easily, and if you want to visit the temple afterward, it's close enough to walk. The class includes all the ingredients, the equipment, a recipe booklet in PDF so you can make these dishes at home, photos of your experience, and water. Vegetarian options are available if you need them, and the group stays small enough that Chef Joy can actually watch what you're doing.

What’s included

Your experience includes a four-course hands-on Thai cooking class with Chef Joy and her family, all fresh ingredients and cooking equipment, bottled water, a PDF recipe booklet to take home, photos from the class, and a meal featuring the dishes you've cooked.
