The Experience

“This one’s been here since my grandma was a girl,” our guide Nok grinned, waving us over to a stall where steam curled up into the sticky Bangkok night. I’d already lost count of how many things I’d tried—something grilled on a stick, then noodles tangled with chili, then these tiny pancakes filled with coconut cream. The smells were wild: fried garlic, sweet mango, the sharp tang of fish sauce. Nok kept telling stories about her childhood in Samphanthawong, pointing out how the area had always been a mix of Thai and Chinese families—she even introduced us to an uncle who ran a dessert stand. The group was small enough that we could actually chat with each other; one couple from Germany tried to pronounce half the menu and everyone cracked up when they gave up on “khanom buang.”
