The Experience

I’ll admit it: I was a little skeptical about the whole “electric tuk tuk” thing at first. I mean, isn’t the noise half the point? But when we zipped away from Siam Paragon with our guide, Pim — who immediately handed me a bag of sticky rice and fried pork (still warm) — I kind of forgot about engines altogether. The air was thick and sweet, like someone had spilled coconut milk on hot pavement. We passed Wat Arun just as the bells started ringing somewhere inside. It was louder than I expected, but in a good way.

Pim grew up nearby and knew everyone — she waved at an old woman selling kanom bueng and then pulled us over to try one. It’s this crispy thing filled with something orange and mysterious (she said “foi thong,” which I definitely pronounced wrong). Li laughed when I tried to say it in Mandarin — probably butchered it. Anyway, we ducked into the Baan Bu community next. There’s this earthy smell from all the clay; you can feel how long people have been making pottery here just by running your hand over a finished bowl. Six generations, Pim said. That’s wild.

The train station felt like stepping into another century for a second — steam locomotives lined up like they might actually go somewhere if you waited long enough. After that, we crossed the river on the Chao Phraya Express (ticket included), which is basically public transport but with better views. The Grand Palace looked almost unreal from across the water; gold spires poking out between laundry lines and satellite dishes.

By the time we hit Pak Khlong Talat flower market, my shirt was sticking to my back and everything smelled like jasmine and marigold stems cut fresh that morning. It’s open 24/7 but somehow still feels like it belongs to locals more than tourists — maybe because most people there barely looked up from their work when we wandered past. We ended with coffee by the river, watching boats scatter light across the water. I still think about that view sometimes when things get noisy back home.
