The Experience
The first thing I noticed was the crunch of sand under my shoes—so fine it almost squeaked. Our driver, Khalid, grinned as we piled into his Land Cruiser just outside Doha. He cranked up some Arabic pop and told us to buckle up (“seriously, you’ll want to,” he laughed). The city faded behind us pretty fast, replaced by this endless sweep of gold and white. I kept thinking: how can there be so much space?
Dune bashing is wilder than it sounds. One minute we were climbing these soft hills at an angle that made my stomach flip; the next, we’d drop down so fast everyone whooped or grabbed for something solid (I might’ve yelped). Khalid seemed to know every curve—he pointed out a falconer’s camp in the distance and told us about his childhood here. We stopped at the top of a dune where the wind was sharp and dry. The view stretched all the way to the horizon—no fences, just ripples of sand.
Sandboarding was trickier than I expected. The board kept slipping sideways and I landed flat on my back once—Khalid tried not to laugh but failed. There was this smell in the air—kind of mineral, sun-baked—and when you lay back for a second, it felt like time paused. After that we drove further south until suddenly there was water—the Inland Sea, right at the Saudi border. It looked unreal after all that desert. We sat quietly for a minute; even Khalid went quiet. I still think about that silence sometimes.
