The Experience
I didn’t think the desert would smell like this—warm, a bit dusty, but sweet too. When our driver picked us up in Doha (he introduced himself as Khalid and had the driest sense of humor), I was mostly just excited to get out of the city. The drive south took about an hour, but honestly, it went fast with Khalid’s stories about growing up around Messaid. He pointed out how the skyline faded behind us and then suddenly we were at the edge of these gold dunes that looked almost fake in the morning light. Before heading off-road, Khalid hopped out and let air out of the tires—I never knew that was a thing for driving on sand.
The first jolt over a dune made me laugh way too loud (my friend grabbed my arm like we were on a rollercoaster). Dune bashing is wild—like being inside a shaken-up snow globe except it’s all sand. We stopped for photos where you could see forever in every direction. There was this weird silence between gusts of wind—just us and some distant camel bells. Speaking of camels: I tried riding one for maybe ten minutes (not as easy as it looks), and Li laughed when I tried to say “shukran” to the handler—probably butchered it. They poured us tiny cups of cardamom tea after, which tasted spicy-sweet and lingered even when we got back in the car.
We made it all the way to the Inland Sea—the water was so blue against all that pale sand. It’s where Qatar meets Saudi Arabia, but standing there it just felt like another planet. I still think about that view sometimes; there’s something about seeing water in a place so dry that makes you feel small in a good way. On the way back, everyone was quieter than before—maybe tired or just letting it sink in. I kept finding sand in my shoes for days after (not complaining).
