The experience

The evening starts with pickup from your hotel or the airport in an air-conditioned 4X4 driven by a certified desert guide who speaks English. On the way out, you pass the oil companies and refineries where flames rise from the filtering process: a sight most visitors to Doha never see. The vehicle carries up to six people on shared tours, or it's yours alone on a private option.

Once in the desert, you stop at a local camel camp where you can ride a camel for five to ten minutes if your option includes it. Then comes the dune bashing: the driver takes the 4X4 over the sand dunes at night, when the desert cools and the sky fills with stars. The route also passes the inland sea, the body of water that separates Qatar from Saudi Arabia, visible under the night sky. Bottled water and tea are provided throughout.

The whole experience runs four hours from pickup to drop-off. Your option at checkout determines whether the camel ride is included: the shared tours without camel and the private tours let you choose. The insurance covers you while you're in the vehicle.
