The Experience

I’ll be honest, I was a little nervous about the whole “dune bashing” part. We got picked up right from our hotel in Doha—no fuss—and our driver (Mohammed) was already cracking jokes before we even left the city. There’s something about leaving behind all that glass and steel for this endless stretch of sand that makes your brain go quiet for a second. You just watch the city fade in the rearview mirror and think, okay, here we go.

The first stop was this camel place—nothing fancy, but I liked that. The camels looked unimpressed by us tourists, chewing away while we awkwardly climbed on for our ten-minute ride. I tried to say thank you in Arabic to the guy leading my camel; he grinned and handed me a tiny cup of sweet tea instead. There were these low Bedouin tents nearby, flapping a bit in the wind. The tea tasted like cardamom and dust—a good kind of dust, if that makes sense.

After that it got wild fast. Mohammed let some air out of the tires (apparently that’s a thing?) and suddenly we’re flying up and down these dunes in his 4x4. My stomach kept dropping but I couldn’t stop laughing—at one point he pointed out where Saudi Arabia starts, just across this shimmering bit of water called the Inland Sea. It’s weirdly peaceful there; you can hear nothing but wind and maybe someone yelling from another jeep far off. We tried sandboarding too—I fell immediately, obviously.

The sun started sliding down as we headed back through the dunes. We stopped just as everything turned gold-pink and sat on this ridge looking out over what felt like half of Qatar. Honestly, it’s hard not to get a little quiet at moments like that. I still think about how small I felt out there—just sand, sky, a few friends sharing tea again before heading back toward Doha lights.
