The Experience

“Hold on tight!” That’s what our driver, Khalid, shouted just before he floored it up the first dune outside Doha. I thought I was ready for dune bashing—turns out, there’s nothing quite like that first drop. The 4x4 felt like a rollercoaster with sand in your teeth (not literally, but I did find some grit later). We’d left MIA Park behind just after lunch; city haze faded fast in the rearview mirror. Out here near Mesaieed, the light is different—everything gold and white and somehow sharper.

Khalid pulled over for tea under this battered canvas tent. He poured cardamom coffee into tiny cups and nodded toward the camels. “Short ride?” he grinned. I tried not to look nervous climbing up—those animals are taller than you think. My friend tried to say thank you in Arabic; Khalid laughed and corrected her gently. The air smelled faintly sweet—maybe from all that tea or maybe just the desert itself.

Sandboarding was next. I wiped out twice before figuring out how to balance (sort of). It’s harder than it looks when your feet are strapped to a board and the wind keeps shifting. There were a couple of other families there too—one kid shrieked every time his dad pushed him down the slope. Afterward we drove further south until suddenly water appeared—the Inland Sea, Khor Al Adaid. It’s surreal: dunes crashing right into turquoise water, no sound except wind and distant laughter. We just sat there for a while on soft sand, not really talking much. I still think about that view sometimes.
