The experience
The day starts with dune driving: the Land Cruiser climbs and descends the sand at speed, and you stop at the top of a dune to photograph the expanse before you. Then comes sandboarding, where you ride the slopes on a board. After 45 minutes in the dunes, the route turns toward the inland sea, a shallow body of water that sits between Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The drive there takes another 45 minutes. The inland sea is where the tour pauses so you can stand and look across the border.
The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, and the operator provides bottled water and coffee or tea at no extra cost. You travel in either a shared group or a private Land Cruiser, depending on which option you book. If you choose the private tour with camel ride, you'll spend time with the animals before heading back to Doha. A live guide travels with you and speaks English, Arabic, Hindi or Urdu, so language is not a barrier.
