The Experience

We’d barely left Doha when the city faded into this endless stretch of beige and gold. The driver — Khalid, who grinned like he knew what was coming — cranked up some music I didn’t recognize, and honestly, my nerves kicked in a bit. Our first stop was a camel ride; the camels looked unimpressed by us, chewing slowly while the wind whipped up little bursts of sand. I tried to say “shukran” after my short ride (Li laughed at my accent), then someone handed me sweet tea in a tiny glass that felt warm against my palms.

The main thing I’d heard about this desert safari was the dune bashing part. It’s hard to explain unless you’ve done it — the car slides sideways sometimes and your stomach does these weird flips. Khalid kept checking on us in the rearview mirror, just to make sure we were still having fun (or not about to lose our lunch). At one point we stopped at the top of a dune; I stepped out and everything went quiet except for the wind. You could see forever in every direction. Sand boarding was next — I wiped out immediately but somehow got sand everywhere except my mouth, so that’s a win.

Later, as we reached Khor Al Udaid — they call it the Inland Sea — there was this strange feeling of being at the edge of something important. The water shimmered under a pale sky and you could almost see Saudi Arabia across the way. We just stood there for a while, not really talking much. On the drive back to Doha I caught myself replaying that view in my head. Still do sometimes, you know?
