The Experience

“You’re going to spill it,” our driver joked as I tried to balance my tiny cup of cardamom tea on the edge of a wobbly camp table. We’d just bumped out from Doha—pickup was right at our hotel, which felt weirdly fancy for a day that would end with sand in every pocket. The camels were waiting nearby, chewing calmly like they’d seen it all before. I didn’t expect to laugh so much trying to climb on one; their fur is rougher than I thought, and the handler grinned when I yelped at the first lurch forward. The desert air smelled a bit like warm stone and something sweet I couldn’t place.

The drive out toward Khor Al Adaid—the “Inland Sea”—felt almost unreal. It’s about an hour from Doha but feels like another planet once you start sliding down those huge dunes (and yeah, sliding is the word). Our guide kept pointing out little things—tracks in the sand from foxes or maybe gazelles, birds darting overhead. At one point he stopped so we could try sandboarding; I fell twice and got sand everywhere, but honestly that part made me feel like a kid again. The silence between gusts of wind was strange—like my ears were ringing but it was just…nothing.

Khor Al Adaid itself is wild—you see this blue water just appear in the middle of endless tan waves. Our guide explained how rare it is for the sea to come this far into the desert; apparently turtles nest here sometimes, though we didn’t spot any (maybe too hot that day). There were some ospreys circling above and if you squint you can see Saudi Arabia across the water. We just sat for a while watching ripples move across the surface—nobody really said much then, which felt right somehow.

I still think about that view when things get noisy back home. The ride back was quieter—everyone sort of lost in their own thoughts or maybe just tired from all the sandboarding attempts. We got dropped off where we started, dusty and grinning. Not everything went smoothly (my shoes will never be clean again), but I wouldn’t change any of it.
