Doha Desert Safari: Sand Boarding, Camel Ride & Inland Sea Swim
Sand dunes, camel rides and a salty sea swim south of Doha

The Experience
We’d barely left Doha when the city haze gave way to this wide, empty stretch — just sand and that weirdly soft morning light. Our guide, Khalid, waved us into his 4x4 with a grin and a thermos of sweet tea (which I spilled on myself before we even hit Mesaieed — typical). I could smell the engine warming up against the cool air. A couple from Turkey sat behind me; they laughed every time we bounced over a dune. The drive out was longer than I expected but not boring — you get these glimpses of oil tanks and then suddenly nothing but sand.
I’d never tried sand boarding before. It’s harder than it looks (my knees still remember), but Khalid shouted encouragement from below and even filmed my wobbly attempt. The wind up there is dry and sharp; you can taste salt in the air if you pay attention. Camels were waiting nearby, chewing like they had all day. My ride lasted maybe ten minutes — enough for me to nearly lose a shoe and for Khalid to teach me “shukran.” He laughed when I tried to say it back; probably butchered it.
The inland sea — Khor Al Adeid — is strange in the best way. You see Saudi Arabia across the water if you squint. We got maybe fifteen minutes to swim (no lifeguard, so you’re on your own), and honestly? That first cold splash after all that heat is something I still think about. No changing rooms or anything fancy — just sand everywhere and the sound of people yelling as they ran in. We dried off as best we could before piling back in for the drive home. The whole thing felt both quick and stretched out at once.
