The Experience
“You know, the stars look closer here,” our driver Khalid said as we left Doha behind, headlights bouncing over empty roads. I didn’t really get it until we stopped for tea — the kind that smells a little smoky and sweet — and the sky was just huge above us. There were camels waiting nearby, their bells making this soft clinking sound. I tried climbing up (awkwardly), but Khalid just grinned and said everyone’s first time is like that.
The sand felt cooler than I expected when we started sandboarding down the dunes. It got everywhere — in my shoes, my mouth once (don’t ask) — but honestly it was more fun than I thought it’d be. The wind picked up a bit and you could taste salt in the air, which surprised me until our guide pointed out that we were close to the Inland Sea. He explained how people come out here at night because the heat drops and you can actually hear yourself think. That stuck with me.
Dune bashing in the 4x4 was wild — half rollercoaster, half trust exercise with Khalid at the wheel. At one point he laughed so hard when I yelped that he nearly missed a turn (or maybe he did it on purpose). The city lights faded behind us until all you could see was this endless stretch of sand under moonlight. We sat there for a while before heading back to MIA Park, not really saying much. Sometimes silence feels bigger than words out there.
