The Experience
“You see that ridge? Hold tight now!” That’s what our driver, Khalid, shouted just before we hit the first big dune outside Doha. I still remember my stomach dropping as the 4x4 tilted — honestly, I laughed so hard I nearly missed the view. The desert here is nothing like I imagined; it’s more alive somehow, with wind patterns and little tracks in the sand. We’d barely left the city when everything changed to this soft gold under the sun.
Khalid stopped so we could meet his friend who runs a tiny camel camp. The camels looked bored but friendly (one tried to eat my backpack). Mounting up was awkward — I almost slid off when she stood up too fast — but then you just settle into this slow rhythm, swaying along while the breeze smells faintly like cardamom and dust. I tried chatting with a local guy leading us; he told me about his family living nearby and pointed out where Saudi Arabia starts way off in the haze.
