The experience
You're picked up from your Muscat hotel in the early morning and driven east toward the coast. The day opens with an easy hike into Wadi Shab, where the wadi's unique rock formations frame deep pools fed by a hidden waterfall inside a cavern: the centerpiece of the morning. You swim in the fresh water and explore the cavern before returning to the trailhead. The physical demand is low enough that the hike suits all fitness levels, though the swimming and cave entry mean you'll want to be comfortable moving through water.
After the wadi, you stop for lunch at a local restaurant in the small village of Tiwi, where the menu runs to grilled chicken, fish of the day or vegetarian options. A short visit to Wadi Tiwi follows, then the route continues south to Sur, the capital of Sharkiya governorate. Here you see the dhow-building yards where workers construct traditional wooden boats by hand. A craft Sur has been known for across the Middle East for centuries. The old town's traditional houses and the corniche skyline round out the stop.
On the return to Muscat, the tour includes two more sites: Qalhat, an ancient city designated a UNESCO heritage site in 2020, and Bummah sinkhole, a natural formation where clear seawater pools. Ferry fees for Wadi Shab and all taxes are covered. The full loop takes 10 hours, which means you leave little room for other activities that day but see a genuine cross-section of the coast's geology, history and traditional culture in one outing.
