Start your adventure with a serene boat ride before exploring emerald pools and rugged mountain trails

A full-day guided tour from Muscat combines Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi, two canyons in Oman with contrasting terrain and water. You start with a small boat ride into Wadi Shab, then hike through rocky ground to a cave with a waterfall and clear pools for swimming. Afterward, a scenic drive and stops lead through Wadi Tiwi's lush, steep-sided landscape. A certified guide, transportation from your Muscat hotel, bottled water and snacks are included.

The experience

Wadi Shab begins with a boat ride that sets you up at the canyon entrance, cutting out the long walk from the parking area. From there, the hike covers rocky terrain and passes hidden waterfalls on the way to the main cave: a chamber with its own waterfall and a pool deep enough to swim in. The hike takes three to four hours, which gives you time to move at your own pace and linger at the water without feeling rushed. This is where the day's physical demand sits. The terrain is uneven and you'll be in and out of water, so footwear that grips matters.

After the hike, you break for a picnic lunch with traditional Omani flavors before moving on to Wadi Tiwi. The drive itself is part of the experience: your guide stops at viewpoints along the way. Wadi Tiwi looks nothing like Wadi Shab: the canyon walls are steeper and closer, the vegetation denser and greener, and the pools are emerald rather than crystal. You explore on foot here too, but the terrain is less technical and the mood is quieter. The contrast between the two wadis is deliberate. It's what separates this tour from the many single-wadi options in the region.

The day runs ten hours door to door. Hotel pickup from Muscat is optional. You can meet the group at Wadi Tiwi instead if you're staying elsewhere or renting a car. The guide speaks English and Arabic. Bring a swimsuit, a change of clothes, and water shoes or sandals that won't slip on wet rock. The operator provides bottled water and snacks, but lunch is a picnic you eat with the group, not a restaurant meal.

Is this one for you?Choose the Muscat pickup option if you're staying in the city and want to travel without driving. Meet at Wadi Tiwi if you're renting a car or staying outside the capital. The boat ride and the two-wadi combination are fixed parts of the tour, so you're getting both the technical hike and the scenic canyon walk no matter which option you pick.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Arabic.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the boat ride like at the start of Wadi Shab?

The small boat carries you a short distance into the canyon to the trailhead, saving you a long walk from the parking area and letting you start the hike fresher. It's a practical opener, not a scenic cruise.

How difficult is the hike to the waterfall cave in Wadi Shab?

The terrain is rocky and uneven, with sections in and out of water, so it suits all fitness levels as long as you're comfortable on rough ground and swimming. The three to four hour duration gives you time to move at your own pace.

What's the difference between Wadi Shab and Wadi Tiwi?

Wadi Shab is a technical hike with a dramatic cave and waterfall. Wadi Tiwi is a gentler walk through a narrow canyon with steep walls, denser vegetation and emerald pools. Seeing both in one day shows two distinct landscapes in the same region.

Is lunch included, and what kind of food is it?

Lunch is a picnic with traditional Omani flavors eaten with the group during the break between the two wadis. It's not a restaurant meal, so bring an appetite for simple, local food.

Do I need to arrange my own transport from Muscat?

Hotel pickup from Muscat is optional and included in one booking option. If you choose to meet at Wadi Tiwi instead, you'll arrange your own transport or rent a car to get there.
