Step-by-step itinerary
Hike to Taiq Cave and Baobab forest
- Walk in Darbat valley and see camels
- Hike above stream among baobab trees
- Descend to huge cave in sinkhole
- Walk to edge of 211m deep sinkhole
The experience
The day starts in Darbat valley, where you walk among year-round greenery and wade into the azure waters of the Darbat river. Camel herds cross the water here, and the valley's huge escarpment rises above seasonal waterfalls: the kind of vantage point that stops you mid-hike to photograph. From there the route climbs higher into the Jabal Qara mountains, building toward the main event: a descent into a sinkhole so vast it holds 90 million cubic metres of space.
The cave sits inside the sinkhole's steep walls, and the descent itself is the experience. You move down through layers of rock with views opening at each turn, the depth of the canyon revealing itself as you go deeper. Once inside the cave, the sheer scale of the hollow becomes real. This is not a small cavern but a massive chamber carved into the mountainside. The walk back up gives you the same views in reverse, each vantage point worth a second look.
After the sinkhole, a short walk takes you to the edge of Tawi Attair, a 211-metre-deep abyss that opens without warning. Then comes the final stretch: a 40-minute hike above a burbling stream through a valley full of baobab trees, the kind of ancient, gnarled growth you don't see elsewhere on the Arabian Peninsula. Bottled water and soda are provided throughout, and your guide speaks your language: English, French, Czech or Arabic. Hotel pickup is included, so the day starts and ends at your accommodation.

Yes. Ticket types: Child (2 to 11 years).

What is Tawi Attair and what do I actually see there?
Tawi Attair is a 211-metre-deep sinkhole in the Jabal Qara mountains. You walk to its edge and look down into the abyss. The depth and the views across it are the draw here, not an interior cave or a descent.
How deep is the sinkhole I descend into, and what's inside the cave?
The sinkhole holds 90 million cubic metres of space and has a huge cave carved into its walls. You descend into it and explore the cave itself, moving through the rock with views of the canyon depth opening as you go down.
What's the Darbat valley part of the hike like?
Darbat valley is a short walk through year-round greenery where you can wade into the azure Darbat river and see camel herds crossing the water. The valley's escarpment rises above, and seasonal waterfalls add to the landscape.
Is this hike difficult, and how long does it take?
The tour runs 6.5 hours total, with a descent into the sinkhole that requires moderate physical fitness. The baobab forest walk is easy, but the sinkhole descent and the terrain demand a reasonable level of strength and stability.
What's included, and do I need to arrange my own transport?
Hotel pickup is included, so you don't arrange transport to the trailhead. The tour provides bottled water and soda throughout the day, and your guide speaks English, French, Czech or Arabic.
