The Experience
The first thing I noticed was how the air changed as we left the city behind—dustier but somehow cleaner, if that makes sense. Our guide Khalid grinned in the rearview and started telling stories about his childhood in Wahiba Sands. I tried to follow along, but honestly I kept getting distracted by those endless dunes outside the window—like waves made of gold. When we finally stopped at a Bedouin woman’s home, she handed me coffee so strong it nearly made me blink twice. Her hands were quick and gentle as she showed us her woven rugs; I tried asking about one pattern (my Arabic is hopeless), and she just laughed and patted my shoulder.
I’d never ridden a camel before—turns out it’s less “romantic desert journey” and more “don’t fall off.” The camel’s slow sway was oddly calming though. The sky was starting to shift colors by then. Khalid called us over for dune bashing next. He cranked up some Omani pop music and suddenly we were flying up sandy hills, dropping down again so fast my stomach did a weird little flip. We stopped on top of a ridge just as the sun started melting into orange and red. There was this hush—no cars, no voices, just wind brushing over sand. I still think about that view sometimes when I can’t sleep.
Dinner came after dark at a camp hidden between dunes—a low fire, carpets everywhere, food that tasted smoky and sweet all at once (I wish I could remember what that rice dish was called). We sat cross-legged while Khalid poured more coffee and pointed out constellations overhead. Someone tried sand boarding after dinner—let’s just say not everyone is meant for Olympic sports. The ride back felt quieter; maybe everyone was just full or maybe nobody wanted to leave yet.
