Swim into a waterfall cave inside a canyon only locals know how to find.

This small-group day trip from Muscat takes you into Wadi Shab, a canyon carved by turquoise pools and waterfalls, where a local guide leads you to a hidden cave behind the main waterfall: a spot most visitors miss. You hike through dramatic rock walls, swim through crystal-clear pools, and finish at Bimmah Sinkhole, a brilliant blue-green natural pool carved into coastal rock. Round-trip transport from your Muscat hotel is included, and the group stays small enough to move at a comfortable pace. Children from age 1 are welcome, and no prior hiking or swimming experience is needed.

The experience

You leave Muscat in the morning with a small group and a guide who knows the canyon's every trail and hidden angle. The drive takes you along the coast, with scenic views building toward the wadi itself. Once you arrive, the hike begins through dramatic canyon walls: the rock formations narrow and open as you move deeper into the landscape. The real draw is the water: turquoise pools invite you to swim between sections of the hike, and the guide knows which ones are safe and worth the plunge.

The hidden waterfall cave is what sets this trip apart from the larger bus tours that stop at the main pools and leave. You swim toward the back of the canyon to reach it, moving through the water to a cave opening where a waterfall drops behind you. It's the kind of moment that makes the hike worthwhile: a place most visitors never find because they don't know to look. After you've explored the wadi thoroughly, the group moves on to Bimmah Sinkhole, a natural pool of brilliant blue-green water carved into the coastal rock, where you can swim again before heading back to Muscat.

The guide speaks English and can also lead in Spanish, Italian, French or other languages depending on the group. Transport from your hotel is included in most options, though you can also meet the group directly at Wadi Shab if you prefer to drive yourself. Infants can sit on an adult's lap, and specialized infant seats are available if you need one. The whole day runs between three and eight hours depending on how much time you spend swimming and exploring. The pace is comfortable, not rushed.

Is this one for you?Book the private tour if your group wants the canyon and cave to yourselves with a dedicated guide and vehicle. Choose the small-group option if you're happy sharing transport and don't mind meeting other travelers: both reach the same hidden waterfall cave and sinkhole, and the small-group pace is still comfortable and intimate. If you're driving yourself, the self-drive option lets you meet the guide at Wadi Shab and skip the hotel pickup.

Top questions

What languages is the guide in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Arabic.

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (3 to 9 years); Infant (1 to 2 years).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the difference between the private tour and the small-group option?

The private tour is just your group in a dedicated vehicle with a guide, while the small-group option shares transport and a guide with other travelers. Both visit the same sites and include the hidden waterfall cave and Bimmah Sinkhole.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to reach the waterfall cave?

The cave requires swimming through a pool, but the guide assesses the water conditions and your comfort level before you attempt it. The pools are calm and turquoise, and the guide stays with the group. If swimming isn't for you, you can stay in the main canyon area while others explore the cave.

How much of the day is actually hiking versus swimming?

The hike moves between pools, so hiking and swimming are woven together rather than separate. You'll walk through the canyon, swim across pools to reach new sections, and spend time in the water at Bimmah Sinkhole as well. The pace is comfortable, not strenuous.

Can I bring my infant, and what's the car situation?

Children from age 1 are welcome. Infants can sit on an adult's lap during the drive, and specialized infant seats are available if you request one. If you choose the self-drive option, you meet the group at Wadi Shab instead of being picked up from your hotel.

What should I bring for a day in the canyon and at the sinkhole?

Bring swimwear, a towel, water shoes or sandals with grip (the rocks can be slippery), sunscreen, and a change of clothes. The guide will advise on what else suits the season and water conditions on the day you go.

Is there a best time of day to do this trip?

Most departures leave Muscat in the morning to take advantage of daylight and cooler temperatures in the canyon. The exact timing depends on your hotel location and the option you choose, but the guide will confirm the pickup time when you book.
