The Experience
The day starts with pickup from your hotel in Muscat, then a 2-hour drive south to Wadi Shab. The canyon itself is a gorge filled with palm trees and greenery, and the water stays crystal clear year-round. You'll hike roughly 40 minutes into the wadi, swimming through 2-3 pools as you move deeper into the canyon. The pools are shallow enough to wade through, but you'll need to swim in places and fit through narrow crevices and rock openings. The payoff is a small waterfall that spills into a cool blue pool inside a cave — the final stop before turning back.
If swimming isn't for you, the first pools are shallow and you can stay there while others continue deeper. Either way, bring sun protection, a hat, good walking shoes, swimwear, extra clothes and a towel. Non-slip water shoes suitable for hiking are essential. The tour involves some challenging hiking, so pack snacks and water for the day. An English-speaking Omani guide leads the group and knows the route and the safest way through the pools and crevices.
On the way back to Muscat, you'll stop at the Bimah sinkhole for photos or a quick swim in the lake, then pass through Fins Beach, a long white-sand stretch where you can sit and relax before the final 2-hour drive home. The whole day takes 8 to 9 hours from pickup to drop-off.
