The experience

The route starts from your hotel in Muscat and follows the coast through Quriyat before climbing over the plateau and dropping down to Wadi Shab. You'll pass Bimmah Sinkhole on the way, a natural pit worth photographing, then arrive at the wadi entrance for the main event. The walk itself covers about 40 minutes through a canyon with green terraced gardens, rocky terrain and stream crossings that lead to a chain of pools.

The pools are the reason people come. You swim in clear water, then navigate through a keyhole-shaped cave opening (narrow enough that you have to duck and squeeze), which opens into a larger cavern inside the rock face. A waterfall flows into the pool there, and the cave itself is the destination. The water is cold and the passage is tight, so this is not a casual wade. Wear sturdy shoes with grip for the rocky approach and be ready to get wet. You'll have time to swim and explore before heading back out for a picnic at the wadi.

The return journey retraces the coast, with a stop at Fins Beach to rest before the drive back to Muscat. The whole day runs 7 to 8 hours door-to-door. Your guide is English-speaking and travels with you the entire time. The vehicle is private, so the group is only your party. National park fees, water and all transport are included.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 12 years); Infant (under 4): free.

How difficult is the walk to the pools at Wadi Shab?

The walk takes about 40 minutes and crosses rocky terrain, pebbles and stream beds through a canyon with terraced gardens. The ground is uneven and strewn with rocks, so sturdy walking shoes with good grip are essential. The path itself is considered easy, but the rocky surface makes footing tricky rather than steep.

What is the cave swim actually like?

You swim in a pool, then pass through a narrow keyhole-shaped opening in the rock (tight enough that you need to duck and squeeze through), which opens into a larger cavern. Inside the cave is a waterfall flowing into the pool. The passage is the main event. The water is cold and you'll get fully wet.

What does the tour include and what should I bring?

The tour includes private round-trip transfer from your hotel, an English-speaking guide, national park entry fees, bottled water and a picnic at the wadi. Lunch is not included, so bring snacks or plan to eat during the picnic stop. Wear sturdy walking shoes, swimwear, a towel and sun protection. The canyon offers little shade.

How long is the full day and when do we return to Muscat?

The tour runs 7 to 8 hours total, including drive time from Muscat, the canyon walk, swimming and the return journey with a stop at Fins Beach. You'll be back at your hotel by late afternoon, leaving the evening free.
